Ice Hotels

Seasonal hotels built from snow and ice, rebuilt from nothing each winter and gone again by spring.

An ice hotel exists for part of the year and then stops existing. It is cut, packed and shaped at the start of winter, used for a few months, and returned to water in spring. Whatever you sleep in has never been slept in before and will not be there next year. One hotel is indexed here.

Iglu-Dorf Davos-Klosters

Davos, Switzerland

The Davos-Klosters igloo village is built each winter high in the Grisons above the resort town, on a snowfield reached from the ski area rather than from a road. Domes are packed from snow and linked into a small settlement, with sleeping igloos, a shared dining dome and a bar of ice.

Sleeping is done on insulated mats in expedition-grade bags; carved reliefs are cut into the interior walls each season, so the decoration is never repeated. Evenings usually run to a hot meal, a walk outside in very clear air, and an early quiet.

Come spring, the site melts and the mountain is bare again. The Davos-Klosters village is one of several Iglu-Dorf locations across the Alps, and it makes the most of an alpine setting that is already famous for winter.
